“Remember When” is 2012 Theme

“Remember When” is the official theme for the 2012 Old Timers’ Festival. After revamping the festival and making it a three day event in 2011 with the theme “New Beginnings,” it was again time to honor the ancestors who first settled LaVergne, which has also been called “Buchananville” and “Mountain View.”

Mr. Neal Martin has been named the grand marshal of the parade in memory of his wife, Nell Martin. Both Mr. & Mrs. Martin were deeply involved in starting the first Old Timers Day in the early 1970s.  Ms. Martin also helped collect and index books for our first library and was a beloved member of Roy Waldron School as the receptionist.

Join us for the 2012 Old Timers Festival, scheduled September 14, 15, and 16 at Veterans Memorial Park.

Old Timers Festival Thank You

Old Timers Festival Thank You
By Mayor Senna Mosley

It is a pleasure to extend my thanks to the community of LaVergne for their support of the 2011 Old Timers’ Festival, held September 16-18 at Veterans Memorial Park.  This was our first year expanding it to a full-blown festival event and the overwhelming feedback we have received from our citizens has been very positive.  If you’d like to see photos, scroll to the bottom of this post and we have a slide show!

While this list is long, please take time to read it so you can personally thank any of these wonderful people should you run into them in person.

On behalf of Parks & Recreation Advisory Board ChairmanTom Broekerand Festival Director Kathy Tyson, I want to first acknowledge our amazing city employees who patiently provided support services (including police support, planning, maintenance, logistics, human resources, and so much more). From parking to set-up, from staffing information booths to providing for public safety (and everything in-between), I thank each of you from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks to the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board members who first recommended expanding to a three-day festival.  Under the leadership of AldermanTom Broeker, others who supported this endeavor are Leann Crawley, Bruce Eichbauer, and Michael Wilson. Special thanks to Laura Davidson, Deborah Edwards and Bob Simon who also dedicated many volunteer hours on-site to make everything work.

I am pleased to offer special thanks to our sponsors, our 17 local food vendors, the artists and crafters who participated, our schools and churches that provided the wonderful entertainment on Saturday and Sunday, and to the people of LaVergne who took advantage of the beautiful weather and came to enjoy the festival.

Additionally, my sincere thanks to the following people and organizations that went above and beyond in helping us:  Ayanna Blake, Helen Blankenship, Mike and Cathy Catanese, Cheyanne and Deborah Balthrop, Melissa Cooper, Neil Davis, William Haley, Roxanna Haynes, Julia Hill and Box 100, Ivy Hogan, Erica King, Kroger, LaVergne Middle School, LaVergne Rescue Squad, Craig Mayer, Keith Miller and the Heart of Tennessee Amateur Radio Emergency Service team, Margie Murphy, Sarah Nelson, Mark O’Neal and the Town of Smyrna, Albury Perry, Captain Bradley Pray and the Delta Troop, Mr. & Mrs. J.R. Sanford, Melissa Stover, Stephanie Tellez, Linda Tomlin, and reserve officer Travis Wilson.

Our stage performers were fabulous this year!  Thanks to Tonya Knell who helped coordinate our entertainment on Sunday and to Alderman Broeker who helped immensely with the Saturday lineup.  Also to our volunteer entertainers: LHS Choraliers, Debbie’s Dance Studio, Roy Waldron School,Jane Ascher& the Zumba Flash Mob, Lakeside Dance Team, Pastor Randy Berg, Miracle Baptist Boys, The Good News, Mastin Brothers and Knell Sisters, and James and Janet Keeton.

It does take the generous spirit and strong work ethic of a village to make a city shine!

Warm congratulations to our parade float winners: Pope’s Mulch and Dirt (1st), LaVergne Middle School Cheerleaders (2nd), and Days Journey Respite Care (3rd). All the floats in the parade were beautiful.  Thank you again to our Grand Marshal Larry Flowers, the LaVergne High School Band, the LHS ROTC Color Guard, Tinkham Automotive, and Alexander Ford.

In Conclusion…

We have very successfully concluded our 2011 Old Timers Festival!  This was the first year we extended it to a three-day event and tried to use most of Veterans Memorial Park and – while we gained very valuable insight on how to make it even better – the overwhelming feedback from guests has been positive.  THANK YOU to everyone who enjoyed our entertainment, the rides, or if you just stopped by to say hello to your friends and neighbors!

The City of LaVergne would like to extend a special thanks to our sponsors, food vendors (who didn’t love those chicken & dumplins and kettle corn??),  the crafters, the civic groups, fire department personnel, and our very professional police force.  You were the backbone of our success!

We would also like to take a moment to recognize the army of city workers and volunteers whose dedication to their jobs and commitment to their community made the event possible. For a full list of names, jump ahead… Continue reading

Meet Petunia

Petunia rolled into La Vergne this afternoon… ready for a good time!  She is one of the potbellied pigs that stars in Skin and Bones Comedy Circus.  Petunia will be joined by two other potbellied pigs, along with several pups at 1:00, 2:30, and 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Have you ever petted a potbellied pig?  Their hair is very bristly.  At one point I thought Petunia was getting ready to eat a tree, but she was just maneuvering herself for a good, solid back-scratch.

Stop by Old Timers Festival this weekend to meet Petunia and her friends!

For those interested in more than just the carnival, here is the official schedule of events… remember, our schedule may sometimes be fluid, so if one act starts late remember we’ll have plenty of shaded seating this year for you to kick back and relax!

The Parade is Coming

The 2011 Old Timers Festival Parade is shaping up to be one of the most beautiful we’ve had.  The parade begins at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17th (line-up at 9:00 a.m. for participants).  We have encouraged our participating organizations and businesses to build floats this year – and they have really come through!  We have almost a DOZEN floats entered, including one for our pageant runners-up!

Float entries include LaVergne Baseball & Softball Organization, SRFC 03 Rapids, F.O.P. Lodge 85 Youth Boxing / Club Knockout, La Vergne Middle School Cheerleaders, Life Church, Chez Lama (who is also one of our food vendors), Robert Carroll of Bob Parks Realty, Inferno Baseball Local Travel Team, Days Journey Respite Care, and LaVergne P.A.L.

We will also have the Shriners again and the Greyhound Pets of America rescue group.   Elected officials from the city and around the county will be a part of the parade, as well as antique cars, our new Miss LaVergne Ashleigh Alford, Junior Miss LaVergne Jessica Pickle, Young Miss Maddie Smith, Young Mister Sammy Puleo, and Little Miss Natalia Jobe.

FYI we have asked that candy NOT be thrown as directed by the city’s liability insurance policy.  Instead parade participants are invited to hand out candy along the parade route.   Also note the parade route will not end on Floyd Mayfield Drive as in the past… instead it will stop on Lillian Buchanan Drive next to the Post Office.

The carnival opens tonight at 6 PM. We saw the carnival while it was setting up this morning and it looks like it is going to be so much fun!

Currently all the rides are being inspected by the state and local authorities to ensure their safety. Once the inspections are finished, it will be good to go!

Rides include a Ferris Wheel, the Scrambler, Super Loop, and many more. Tickets are a dollar each and each ride takes two or more tickets. Tickets also can be purchased 12 for $10 or 24 for $20 with one free ride.
